Panther Tales

Message from Director of Academics, Dena Schweitzer

Welcome to the first edition of Panther Tales! Panther Tales is a way to keep up to date on the many events happening at OMPS. We will also showcase our students' work and achievements with you each week. Please watch for our weekly updates every Friday. As a staff, we are very grateful you have chosen to be part of our crew!
A kind word can warm three winter months. --Japanese proverb
This month the students have been working on spreading kindness within the classroom, school, and the greater community. The students and staff have been passing out hearts when they see acts of kindness. The hearts are covering the Grinches in our school! Ask your child what the different colored hearts mean!

Safe Harbor
In honor of the OMPS kindness initiative, Mrs. Hague’s fourth grade students thought it would be great to give back to the community.  The students decided to make ornaments and sell them at the Winter Concert, and donate the money to Safe Harbor in Traverse City.  The class sold over 40 ornaments, and some students donated their own money.  The students’ smiles and enthusiasm during the making, selling and counting the money received was electric!  In all, the class collected and donated $143.70!

Food Drive
Next week, students at OMPS have the opportunity to contribute to making a better world by sharing with others. The PTO is holding a food drive to support the Traverse City High School Food Pantry. Dry and canned goods, personal care items (e.g., toothpaste/toothbrush, shampoo/conditioner, soap, lip balm), diapers, hats, and mittens are all needed. The students may bring in the items from Monday through Thursday December 17 - 20.

Please join us on Friday, December 21 from 1:30-2:15 for Mrs. Axelson's Top 10 Holiday Countdown. The students have voted on their favorite songs. Stop by to count down with them to their favorite song for 2018!

Parents are welcome to bring their children to shop before/after school hours when the store is open, and teachers will allow time around classroom schedules during the school day. You are welcome to send money and a list of people to shop for with your child in a marked envelope, and volunteers will help students budget, shop and wrap. Items are priced $0.25-$5, and all children will be able to select gifts for their family no matter their monetary situation.
